Here at Giftaholic we love to board, and when we can’t be on the mountain carving up the slopes, pulling tricks in the half pipe or dropping off really big cliffs we’re dreaming about the next trip when we can!
But now with the release of Shaun White Snowboarding we need dream no longer! Many thought when Nintendo released the Wii Fit board that it would be a passing fad and once people had got over the novelty of Wii Fit they’d get bored of it pretty quickly.
However it’s games like this which is why it has become the most popular console accessory of 2008 and why in 2009 it will continue to be harder to find than a happy banker!
Shaun White Snowboarding Road Trip plays to all the Wii’s strengths using its unique control opportunities and the balance board to make the sibling versions on the Xbox and Playstation look just plain ordinary.
Don’t expect to become Shaun White overnight though as initially the coordination of positioning your feet correctly on the board, synchronising hitting buttons on the remote and moving your feet to pull of tricks is almost as hard as the real deal, so expect to get a face full of snow more than a few times as you learn how its done.
However, this is half the fun, just adding to the longevity of the game, and once you’ve got the hang of it, it feels incredibly natural. So just think, at least you don’t get cold and end up with a sore bum like you would if you were learning on snow!
Those who don’t own Wii Fit will be able to play along using the remote to steer their ‘boarder, but to get the full physical experience you’ve really got find that Wii Fit board from somewhere, because without it the game just isn’t half as much fun.
In our opinion Shaun White Snowboarding Road Trip is an awesome game and Ubisoft have been very clever in producing a title that has addressed why people by a Wii over other consoles. It uses the balance board, it feels social and intuitive through its unique handling, and by doing away with the realistic graphics in favour of a more cartoonish style they have clearly marketed it at the consoles core audience, families. Making this, we think, the must have Winter Sports game this Christmas.
