**** Sale Time! All the game company’s have gone crazy and right now is the perfect time to be stocking up on those games you always wanted but couldn’t justify the price tag, many games under half price, it’s simply amazing! ****
You can’t think of Sega without thinking of Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic and Sega are one and the same, what Mario is to Nintendo, Sonic is to Sega. However while Mario has gone from strength to strength, with the latest addition to the series Super Mario Galaxy, possibly one of the finest platform games of all time, the transition of Sonic into the third dimension has so far resulted in increasing degrees of failure. Consequently every new Sonic release carries with it the hope that the little blue hedgehog will be able to capture the form that made him one of the true stars of the 90′s.
So we are delighted to be able to report that this latest offering from the guys at Sega is a return to form, while it maybe a rough diamond in need of a little work to achieve perfection, it most definitely has many moments of sparkling brilliance that capture the frantic speed of sonic in his heyday, that make it well worth the £16.98 price tag.
A gorgeous game, that although obviously doesn’t look as good as the xbox 360 and Playstation 3 versions, which take advantage of the powerful new “Hedgehog Engine”, that has been three years in development, it still seamlessly transitions between 3D and 2D, without losing any sense of direction and control. Even during the trademark speed-through loops, collapsing bridges, jump pads and zigg zagging pathways that instantly take you back to Sonic of old. If anything, the Wii version actually provides a superior gaming experience thanks to the entirely new levels and much more responsive controls.
Like any good Sonic game the storyline is paper thin and once again Dr. Eggman is back with a new evil plan, this time a deranged plot to release the planet’s hidden force, Dark Gaia. Eggman uses a new laser beam to break apart the earth and in so doing accidentally corrupts and scatters the famed chaos emeralds about the continents. Go figure! Meanwhile, the same beam changes Sonic, altering him into the werehog whenever the sun goes down.
This adds a completely new dimension to the Sonic experience, however unfortunately it is these new Werehog levels that let the game down, they feel slow and repetitive and you will find yourself hurrying through them to get back to the fast paced, action packed excitement of the day time levels, that are so reminiscent of Sonic of old. Luckily these levels can be played again and again, without getting old thanks to the secondary missions, and ring challenges, that successfully add enough new hurdles to stop them from simply feeling like add ons designed to add on a few minutes extra gameplay.
A sequel, with more speed and less Werehog would be ideal, but for now, Sonic Unleashed is far an away the best Sonic game to be released in the last 10 years, and is well worth the £19.99 that we have found it for, welcome back Sonic!
